Lunch & Learn 1/7    Commenting on Exodus stories of slavery and liberation, the burning bush, the revelation at Sinai, the golden calf, the shattering of the tablets, the building and consecration of the tabernacle, Avivah Gottlieb Zornberg weaves a magnificent tapestry of classical biblical, talmudic, and midrashic interpretations; literary allusions; and insights from philosophy and psychology, a new perspectiveson the biblical themes of exodus and redemption.

Friday, July 27th is the holiday of Tu B'Av - a more joyous answer to the earlier holiday of Tisha B'Av. Ritualwell (do you know Ritualwell? They're the Reconstructing Judaism site that is chock full of resources, prayers, and new ways of looking at our faith!) has a beautiful story for this holiday celebrating love, and you can read it here.

Tisha B'Av begins at sundown on Saturday, July 21st

There are some beautiful writings on the internet about this holiday. To learn the basics you can visit Chabad, Wikipedia, or even My Jewish Learning.

But my favorite comes from Ritual Well, a piece called The Lament of the Twelve Sisters.

And I'll end with this excerpt from a poem by Rabbi Patt Haskell


"...Ancestors' sobs echo through winding old city streets
Then settle here, to mingle in my modern ears,
Over thousands of years, over thousands of miles.
The breaking of ancient hearts reflected by cracks in mine.
I am the diaspora.
I am your pain.
Though I've walked in your footsteps

What better way to enjoy summer than with Shabbat and a barbecue?


Join us on Friday, August 3 at 6:00 p.m. as we celebrate community and open our doors to Rabbi Lina’s first service as our Full-time Rabbi.​

Service will start at 7PM
Dessert to follow Service

​Join KSS for a fun night with friends as we take a ferry ride to Fire Island for a lobster and steak buffet at Flynn’s on 
Thursday, August 9th!
  
The price per person will be $80 and includes boat transport on the Moonchaser (see above), Flynn's buffet and tip as well as a donation to Kehillath Shalom Synagogue.
(Cash bar is available on the boat and at Flynn’s.) Invite friends and family.

Meet at Captree State Park no later than 6:45 for the 7 pm Moonchaser departure to Flynn's. Enjoy the beautiful 40-minute ride.
(Directions to Captree are available at here)
 
At Flynn's, sit at our KSS tables and enjoy the lobster/prime rib buffet with salads, sides and dessert. When you need a break, stand up and enjoy the live music.
We have space for up to 24 people!

The Moonchaser departs Flynn's at 10:30 pm. Once again, attendees must get to the boat at least 15 minutes before departure.

The event is rain or shine as the boat has an interior and Flynn's is covered.
