This Shabbat is Shabbat Zachor, the Shabbat of Remembrance.

We are to remember what Amalek did to us on the journey to the Promised Land, how he "cut down the stragglers in the rear." This is read on the Shabbat before Purim because Amalek is an ancestor of Haman.

Interestingly, the Torah commands: "you shall blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven. Do not forget!"

These seem like opposite goals. What does this mean? We should recognize that there is anti-semitism in the world and be prepared to stand against it, and we should live as though there is no anti-semitism: we should live joyfully and openly and bravely. Shabbat shalom.
